Occupy Philly 30+ Days

Occupy Philly continues despite 30+ days of living in tents around City Hall and the weather getting colder and nastier.  I’m all for the movement and think it’s long over do, let’s hope everyone can keep the momentum going.  Other cities have had a variety of clashes with the Police, Philly thankfully has remained calm.  Apparently there was a vote this past to stay put despite the scheduled renovations to Dilworth Plaza.

Occupy Philly Day 5

Spent the afternoon at City Hall today.  Art work, tents, signs, speeches, young and old all there to articulate the frustration many of have felt at the way this country has been developing.  The people want to be heard, they want action, they want representatives who represent the majority of citizens not corporations.  No matter what the Supreme Court argues corporations should not have equal rights or more rights than individuals.  Corporations are made of individuals who already have inherent rights they don’t more through corporations.   Keep up the good work everyone and change will come.

It’s been a long trek to get to this point.   I thought it was going to happen 15 years ago.  But the country took another hard right and it seems has been taking more and more radical rights ever since.  Has the sleeping giant been awakened or is this a flash in the pan?  The country hasn’t seen this wide of a  disparity between the wealth of the lower/middle earning population and the upper since the 1920′s.  Unions have never been weaker in the same time period as they are now.  Pensions were raided in the 80′s.  Welfare cut back and jobs sent of overseas in the 90′s, 401k’s dissolved in the 00′s.   Real Estate wealth raided since 2006.  CEO’s and top exec’s  pay at all time high’s.  Unemployment hovering at 10% for three years.  Bailouts for Wall St and Corporations.  At war for almost 10 years with two countries.  Insurance and medical costs at all time highs.  Oil gouged at ever level.  Human rights violated.

So has the 99 percent finally awakened from their sleeping slumber?  Will it grow to numbers that really count?  This old fool sure hope so and will join the fray this weekend.

It gets really hard to see what the police have been doing in NYC to the protestors.  Police are union members.  They are our neighbors, friends and family.  We are all Americans, why would they do that to their own?  We pay their salaries.

One thing that is as American as apple pie is the right to free speech and protest.  The real Tea Party, the 1700′s version, was a protest.

So America get out there and speak your mind.  Let our representatives know what you think and want and expect.  If we don’t corporate America and the top 1% will continue to take away and change life.
